Holbrook is a small city in northeastern Arizona, located along Interstate 40 in Navajo County and serving as a gateway to several distinctive landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. The community lies near the Little Colorado River and is surrounded by open grassland, desert, and colorful badlands. Holbrook has long been associated with transportation across northern Arizona, and its location on the historic Route 66 corridor remains an important part of its identity. The city also provides access to Petrified Forest National Park, whose extensive deposits of fossilized wood are among the region’s most recognizable geological features.

Holbrook’s history reflects the many cultures and industries that have shaped northeastern Arizona. The area lies within the broader homeland of the Diné and other Indigenous peoples, while nearby communities maintain strong Native American traditions and artistic practices. The arrival of the railroad and the development of Route 66 transformed Holbrook into a transportation and trading center. Ranching, railroads, and tourism remain important elements of its heritage. The Navajo County Historical Society Museum preserves local artifacts and records, while the Wigwam Motel, with its distinctive concrete teepee-shaped rooms, recalls the roadside architecture associated with historic Route 66.

Petrified Forest National Park is Holbrook’s principal nearby attraction, extending across a landscape of fossilized trees, painted badlands, mesas, and desert grasslands. The park’s Painted Desert provides broad views across layered formations, while the Blue Mesa and Crystal Forest showcase colorful geological formations and petrified wood. Within Holbrook, the Rainbow Rock Shop and other Route 66 sites reflect the city’s connection with roadside travel. The nearby Little Colorado River adds another element to the landscape, although its flow varies considerably. Wildlife in the region includes pronghorn, coyotes, mule deer, jackrabbits, and numerous desert and grassland birds.
